Do you take pride in owning a North Face bag? These well-known bags are renowned for their toughness and adaptability. Still, just like any other outdoor gear, they require routine upkeep to stay in top condition and deliver optimal performance.
But I must check if I’m properly washing my North Face backpack. Following the advice below, you can help your bag stay clean and durable.
Keeping a New North Face Backpack Clean
If you recently purchased a brand-new, immaculately clean North Face backpack, you might want to keep it that way immediately.
The most straightforward approach to guaranteeing that your bag will always be spotless and appear fresh is to do this.
If you use your bag every day, you should do the following at least once a week. This maintenance step should be enough if you just use it for specified purposes, such as camping or vacationing.
You will require the following:
- Toothbrush
- Clean cloth
- Towel
- Hanger
- Bleach-free detergent (only use if necessary)

How to Wash a North Face Backpack
Step 1 – Clean Out the Backpack
Guys, let’s get things started. It would help to clean your bag before you can “clean” it. This entails checking every pocket and storage space to ensure everything is noticed.
The last thing you want is a dry rucksack but a broken phone or a damp piece of paper with an unreadable phone number.
Step 2: Keep everything dry to begin with
To start, you should use a dry paper towel (or ordinary towel) to wipe away the majority of the visible dirt and filth. You can prevent making a mud-like substance that can make matters worse by clearing out most of the dirt when it’s dry.
Step 3 – Wipe the Bag Down
Hopefully, most of the dirt has been removed from your backpack by this time. Repeat the shaking procedure to remove most of the remaining visible dust or grime.
Despite all the shaking and wiping, there will still be dirt inside the pockets. You should only use water to dampen a paper towel or cloth, then wring it out.
Start cleaning the interior. We often like to wipe down surfaces two to three times before re-soaking the rag and cleaning it or getting fresh paper towels.
Follow each seam as you go through this process for the bag’s interior first (where the less obvious filth accumulates), then on to the exterior.
Wiping Down Inside and Out
Feel free to rinse the rag during the cleaning process constantly. Instead of just moving the dirt around, you must trap it in the cloth and transport it to the water.
Step 4: Let the Bag Soak
Some of you (assuming your backpack isn’t filthy) can stop at the previous step. However, some of us must clean it more carefully than others.
Run some lukewarm water in your sink or bathtub (the bathtub works best because you’ll need to constantly flip the bag around to submerge different parts of it in a sink where it probably won’t fully submerge).
At this moment, refrain from applying soap. Ideally, we want to clean the backpack without using detergents or chemicals.
The best action is to wash your bag as sparingly as possible because you never know how they’ll interact with it.
Ensure all pockets are open and the tub is filled enough to cover the bag completely before immersing it in the water.
To remove any remaining dirt, gently shake the bag with your hands. Having an old toothbrush on hand will help you clean any spots that require it.
Step 5 – Less is More (Submerge The Backpack)
At this stage, 99% of you should have a clean bag, so we advise moving on to the last step.
It’s time to break out the OxiCleanTM or another mild cleanser for those with tough stains that water won’t get rid of (coffee or red wine, for example).
Make sure your cleaner does not contain any bleach, please, please, please. We don’t think an explanation is necessary, so we’ll just say that adding bleach will turn your red bag pink.
Once more, you should run a tub full of warm water. Certainly include some cleaner. Less is more is the key in this situation.
You want to avoid having a sudsy mess as a result. It will complete its task, but you might only get some things out of the bag.
As little as 1-2 teaspoons of powdered detergent have worked well for us. Make sure to fully mix it up so there is no grit at the bottom of the container (that will undoubtedly end up in a gap in the bag somewhere).
You should now immerse the bag, just as you did earlier. Make sure the stained area is submerged in the water at all times. Let it soak for 4–12 hours, depending on how terrible the stain is.
Use your best judgment in this situation, although inspecting it after 30 minutes will typically show you whether it has effectively removed the stain. Use your fingertips to gently rub the stain to determine if it is moving in the right direction.
Step 6: Rinse several times.
Once your bag is clean, you should ensure all soapy traces are gone. Refill the tub with fresh water, then immerse the backpack once more to get rid of it. Continue doing this until all of the soapy residue has been removed.
Step 7: “Hang It Up”
Dry the bag by hanging it upside-down.
To speed up drying, hang your backpack upside-down to drain any remaining water. Although it may seem strange, you should dry your backpack slowly.
